What is the proper and legal way to dispose of hand gun ammuntion?

I recently purchased the contents of a storage room at auction and among the contents were several boxes of ammo of various calibers. While I am a hunter and familiar with ammunition, I've never been in the position of needing to dispose of live rounds. I don't want to simply throw them in the dumpster as I could see several bad results coming from that. Any suggestion/ideas? Thanks.

  1. turn them over to your local sheriff or police department.

  2. Give them to your local police department, they might be able to use them.

  3. Turn them over to the sherriff, or if you are a dealer, sell them at discount.

  4. Take it to the local law enforement agency and explain why you are turning it in. You're right about disposing of it yourself, I would turn it in and let them dispose it.

  5. Surprises me that you are a hunter and don't know what to do with the excess ammo. Take it to your local gun shop, they'll determine if it's in good condition or not, and possibly may buy it. Sure you can give it to the local sheriff, they will destroy the stuff.

  6. , christsake don't give up ammo to anyone!! Keep it, sell it, use it for barter.. Ammo is currency.

put it on gunbroker.com, find a buddy that has the calibers in question, if it's 9mm, 45ACP 40cal, or even some of the off the wall calibers there is money to be had.

Don't piss it away by giving it to gooberment!!

You can maybe make some money on it.

  7. Sell it if you're not going to use it. Capitalism rules!

  8. Give it to the local police or Sheriff. They may be able to use it or destroy it.

  9. DON'T waste the Police time on turning in ammo!!!.

Take it to a local gun club or reloader.

Or soak them in soapy water and throw em in the trash.
