  1. Most of the ponies and foals are auctioned between $150-1,000.The swim is a really cool event!

  2. yes, just a few hundred dollars. very inexpensive. however, i wouldn't recommend watching the swim- it's pretty sad, because the horses are all panicked and afraid.

  3. The bidding usually starts at 500 dollars and can go up all the way to 17,500! That was the highest bid last year for a chincoteague pony that was a paint. But usually the price is around 1,500-3,000 dollars which isn't that bad considering. Make sure if you are going to buy one that you don't donate them back to the island to live another year if you are planning to train one. People can buy them for the firefighters and then the firefighters will turn them lose to live another year on the island until the next auction. That is so there is new breeding stock on the island. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43NNsLu5Nkc here is someone bidding on a foal for 1,500 dollars.

Here is the record setting foal for 17,500: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1h-fBkAMON4

Here is one for 9,500: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3GHVO1RuHE&feature=related

  4. Average price is $1500

  5. Considering that they're weanling ponies, they're REALLY expensive!!

The lower end - $500-ish - is usually those weanlings which have been designated as donations. The fire department selects the ones they want to go back to the island for breeding stock, and the winning bidder just gets the honor of naming the foal.

Only the current year's foals are sold; no adults.

  6. the average price is about 1200 a horse. make sure you are prepared for that kind of challenge tho. Many people read the book and have some beautiful fantasy in their heads. A task for only very experienced horse people. Chincoteagues are stubborn and headstrong. I just bought one. Her old owners bought her when she was 2 months old and sold her to me when she was 7 years old. Misty is good with people but stubborn and a challenge
