Is an old radar gun hazardous to tinker with? Has JF100 transmitter.?
Got one in a box at an auction. Neat! It doesn't work and some of the knobs are loose so I want to try to fix it. It lights up, but only shows 17 mph.

- HI, Well technically it is a transmitter and requires a license to be operated legally. Because they were simplly purchased by local police at first and not added to their station license ( this was a long time ago, many a ticket has been given since this time!) Some sharp lawyers got their clients off as the ticket were gotten by ILLEGAL MEANS ! But alas that was many years ago! Technically they require a license. I personally have never heard of anyone been actually fined or challenged by the FCC. The transmitter does emit a very weak microwave signal and it could be harmful if it is held real close to your body. Just aim the antenna away from you, and anyone else. Around 5 feet is safe in front. You can safely measure baseball speed if you can get the thing to work. If you have a regular portable radio, or an amplifier a transistor amplifier you can aim the gun at the radio or amplifier while the volume is turned up. If you hear a humming sound as the gun is aimed at one of the input transistors then the gun is actually sending out a microwave signal. You might have to turn up the volume up real high. The transistor will rectify the signal and then amplify it! This way you will at least know that the unit is sending out a signal! Another way would be to use a radar detector and see if there is a signal coming out ... If you have access to a radar detector! For pure meaness you could just put the gun in your window in your home and watch everyone hit their brakes when their radar detectors go off !!!!! EVIL THOUGHT !! HAVE FUN IT WOULD TEND TO SLOW DOWN THE VEHICLES IF THEY DO SPEED IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD. SOME STATE POLICE (SUPPOSIDILY) TOOK THE MICROWAVE TRANSMITTERS OUT AND HID THEM IN THE BACK WINDSHIELD OF THEIR PERSONAL VEHICLES, SO THAT IT WOULD DRIVE SPEEDERS CRAZY AS THEIR WIVES WENT ABOUT TOWN! FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND, SEVERAL RADAR DETECTORS WERE THROWN OUT AND OR PERMANTLY TURNED OFF AS A NUISANCE AS THEY WERE CONSTANTLY GOING OFF! +++ THE WORLD IS AT YOUR MERCY.+++ AGAIN HAVE FUN.
