  1. You can damage it with a large hammer where it can not be repaired or fired ever again. Make sure it is unloaded first !
  2. Your other option is to transfer those firearms to someone that you know is a responsible gun owner. Then they will not be sold and handled responsibly.
  3. Interesting question. I have heard of some states selling firearms but only to licensed dealers or persons who have a permit. Let me say in Connecticut this is not allowable by statute. When a gun is either ordered destroyed by the court or turned in by someone who wishes it disposed of, its sent out for a ballistic test to ensure there isn't a slug retrieved from someones wisdom nut from a murder somewhere else. Then the gun is shipped out to the state police and sent under the watchful eye of police to a foundry and its smelted. I don't know if I'd be too keen that a gun that was turned in for destruction to the police was used to plug my little, old gray haired mother in a robbery. I think I'd have a real bone to pick. There are better ways to generate revenue then that in my opinion.
  4. Alright, the truth. ATF, Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, licenses persons, and businesses to buy, sell or transfer firearms. They do not license police departments, they are considered exempt. However, they are not allowed to sell firearms to anyone other than their own employees or a licensed dealer. If you give your firearms to the police department they can sell them to a licensed dealer, but not at a public auction, as with found or recovered property. The best way to make sure your firearms are destroyed is to unload them, take a hacksaw to the frame, and then a large sledgehammer. A licensed dealer does not want to buy a damaged firearm. Just make sure you do not deface the serial number, that is a federal offense. Then, when you turn them in to the police department, make sure they have a written statement from you that you are requesting they be destroyed, not sold. Then, if they get out you can sue the department. That normally keeps them honest.
