How cheap and reliable are cars at Auto Auctions?
My husband and I have to buy another vehicle and we have about $1,600 cash. I was looking into some auto auctions but I dont know what the usual price cars go for there and if they are even reliable cars. Anyone have any idea?

- Reliability completely depends on each individual car, mainly on how it was maintained by previous owners. As for the price, that depends on how many cars are available and who else is there that wants them enough to bid higher than you.
- For that money you can get a pretty decent car. Cars sell for sheap cheap prices at auction. Check the car out though... There is junk also.
- Car auctions are "AS-IS" sales and you need to remember that what you buy is what you get and there are no returns, hire a mechanic to go with you for your protection.
- Reliability varies, there's no guarantee of a good buy basically. Auctions tend to be of cars repossessed, look at carfax.com for a vehicle history report before making any purchase I guess that's the best I can recommend. Prices also vary btw but are usually low
- I assume you are talking about public auctions. Dealer auctions are closed to the public and I've been to a lot of those. Most cars in that price range have a ton of miles on them and need a bunch of work that the people don't want to put into the vehicle. That's why they take them to the auction. To get rid of them. Once in awhile, you will find a good one, but they're rare.
- All auctions are different. Not all are "AS_IS", but most. My personal preference is to buy a vehicle at an estate sale rather than just an auto auction. Most estate sales we sell are for elderly people, the dead, or people moving. A lot of times their vehicles have low miles and have been taken care of. At an auto auction open to the public there are a lot of dealers there selling and scamming. Although, sometimes you can get a good deal. You just have to know what your looking for. Remember when purchasing at an auction all of the fees that the sale has. Most have a buyers premium, and some have other fees. Some sales have signs above the auctioneer telling the crowd Title specs, warranties, and conditions on the cars.
